Sights of Agios Efstratios

Churches and chapels

When in Agios Efstratios, you should visit the church of Christ, of Agios Nikolaos and the church of Agios Vasilios, which is the greatest meta-byzantine monument of the island and it was erected in 1727, as stated in the wall inscription over the arch door. It is a two-room temple with a small dome, while its roof is covered with slate and the dome with tiles. The Agios Minas chapel was erected on a hill where ancient relics were discovered. In the same area, there is the Cenotaph of the Exiled (1941-1942) and the grave of the German officer who died during World War II.

Marasleios School and the Museum of Democracy

It is the first Greek public museum dealing with a period of recent Greek history of crucial political and social importance. The site chosen for it was the island of Ai-Stratis or Agios Efstratios, because for many years - from the early 1930s to 1943 and again from 1948 to 1963 - it was a place of internment for political exiles.
What is now the museum building was originally a school - the first one on the island. In the periods when Ai-Stratis was a place of exile for political internees, it was used as an infirmary. The building was so badly damaged by the 1968 earthquake that it had to be abandoned. In 2005 restoration work was put in hand by the Ministry of Culture (Department of Modern Monuments and Engineering Works, North Aegean Region). The restoration was completed in November 2007
The museum houses exhibits, such as photographs, original objects, hand written newspapers and video projections from the lives of the people exiled on the island. The task of collecting exhibits and organizing the museum was undertaken by the Ministry of Culture's Directorate of Modern Cultural Heritage.

The cave of Agios Efstratios

The cave where Agios Efstratios found refuge when he was chased by the iconoclasts is perched on a rock near the beach of Alonitsi. A visitor should visit this place, not only for its history, but also for its magnificent view.

Sea caves

There are many sea caves in the island. The most known ones are Tripia Spilia (Hollow Cave) near the port, where you can enter, by boat, from one side and exit from the other. The second cave is the cave of Fokias (Seal), in the area of Daskalio, named after the seals that live there, as in many other caves of the island.

Monument of Nikolaos Sialmas

The monument is found at the Tripiti cape (now Nikolaos Sialmas), at the southern part of the island. This monument is dedicated to Nicholaos Sialmas, a Greek pilot who crashed in the Aegean Sea with Mirage F1 during a fight with a Turkish F-16. The monument lists MOLON LABE (Come and get them if you can), under a shield with a spear (the emblem of Sialmas unit).
